Benefits:

Volunteer research assistants have the opportunity to gain hands-on research experience, including participant interaction, data collection, and analysis. These experiences can help students build valuable skills and prepare for graduate studies or other post-graduate career paths.

Requirements:
We require a commitment of 7-12 hours per week for a minimum of 2 semesters. A GPA of 3.5 or higher is typically required.

Undergraduate Students

New students:

The lab is no longer accepting project students for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Supervision:

Dr. Szekely supervises undergraduate honours theses (e.g., PSYT 400) and research projects. Please note that students will be paired with a graduate student from the lab, who will supervise them for the majority of the time.

Graduate Students

New students:

Dr. Szekely will be accepting one graduate student to begin in Fall 2025.

Strong applicants typically have experience conducting independent research, a well-defined vision for the research they wish to pursue in graduate school, and a long-term dedication to a research-oriented career. Applicants with an interest in perinatal mental health, parent-infant attachment, and relational health are especially encouraged to apply.

Collaboration

Collaborators:

Dr. Szekely and her team actively seek collaborations with researchers, clinicians, and institutions to advance the study of perinatal mental health, parent-infant attachment, and relational health. The lab welcomes opportunities to partner on interdisciplinary projects that align with its research interests, including topics related to mindfulness, compassion, and the emotional well-being of families during the perinatal period.

Collaborative projects may involve:

  • Sharing data or expertise in perinatal mental health and relational health interventions.
  • Joint grant applications to national and international funding bodies.
  • Co-authorship on publications and presentations at academic conferences.
  • Developing innovative methodologies, including the use of physiological and neuroimaging data.
